Traditional Tiramisu contains a short list of ingredients: finger biscuits, egg yolks, sugar, coffee, mascarpone cheese and cocoa powder. the original recipe contained no liquor or egg whites. The original shape was round, even though the biscuits were square or rectangular in shape. Sometimes it is made in round glasses. You can read more about this delightful desert and it's history here
I am southern and called by many "The Strawberry Lady" and my husband is Italian. I guess you could call this a Southern Strawberry Lady's Italian Tiramisu. I must have strawberries and chocolate in the recipe. Chocolate Ganache will be added as a drizzle over the top. I'll be using our sour cream pound cake instead of the finger biscuits. The traditional shape is round I will make mine in a Trifle Dish.
I didn't have any mascarpone cheese so I chose to make a cream cheese mixture similar to a fruit dip that I make. I had a half pound cake in the freezer and fresh strawberries from a local farm in the fridge so why not make this.
Ingredients
1/2 Sour Cream Pound Cake. Recipe here
**you can use half and freeze the rest for up to 3 months.**
1 Cup extra strong coffee
1 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
Strawberries just a few, a dozen large, cut in half. (optional)Cheese Mixture
Two 8oz. Packages Philadelphia Cream Cheese Softened
1 cup Sour Cream
1 cup Powdered Sugar
1/2 tsp. Almond Extract
2 cups Cool Whip Whipped Topping (real whipped cream won't hold up well in this recipe)
Chocolate Ganache for Drizzle over the top (optional)
2 oz. Baker Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate Bar
Very small amount Whipping Cream
Look at the fabulous crust on this cake! I was especially proud of this one and wish I could hand you a piece right now! You can see I started to layer the cake around the edge and then changed my mind so the layers would show.
Instructions
Cut your pound cake into 1/2 inch thick slices all around.
Layer cake pieces in the bottom of the dish of your choice, breaking to fill.
Drizzle some of the coffee over the cake slices.
(**keep in mind the number of layers you want to preserve the coffee to cover all cake layers. **)
Optional: Add a few sliced strawberries next.

Making Cheese Mixture
In mixer bowl add: Cream Cheese, Sour Cream, Powdered Sugar, Almond Extract. Mix well until smooth. Fold The Cool Whip into the cheese mixture.
Layer some of the Cheese Mixture next and continue on for as many layers as you can for your dish.
Sprinkle cocoa through a sifter on the very top layer
Make and add Ganache below if you wish.
Directions for Chocolate Ganache
Melt the chocolate bar in the microwave a minute, remove from microwave stir add a small amount of whipping cream. Whisk together until you get the consistency of a glaze. Drizzle over the top.
Chill 6 hours or overnight for better flavor.

Well as you can see I got carried away...I was making a pretty little design but then the chocolate took hold and I just poured...
