Onion Strings ~ Ruby Tuesday CopyCat Recipe

We went to a restaurant the other night and all I could think of was those onion strings that Ruby Tuesday's has.  I love them.  I love onions.  I find people either love onions or they absolutely hate them.

I decided that very night that I would come home and make my own.  I was on a mission.  Well, let me tell you recipes for these onion strips are all over the internet.  I found one that used ranch dressing instead of buttermilk and one that added Lawry's Seasoned Salt.  The unusual thing in this search is that those two items mentioned were the only differences I saw. There were lots of former Ruby Tuesday Employees talking about how to do it.  Same recipes, same ingredients.

Today I chose to use the Pioneer Woman's Recipe but pretty much all out there use the same ingredients.  She has lots of pictures so be sure to visit her page.

Printable Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1-2 Vidalia Onions (I chose Vidalias because they taste better to me)
TIP** Use 2 onions for a large crowd.  For a family of 4 you can use 1 onion
  • 2 cups buttermilk or regular milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar added.

Coating Mix

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 2 qts. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp. cracked black pepper
** Note 12/13/23 ** I added several dashes of paprika, onion powder and garlic powder**

Deep Fry Thermometer
* I like this digital instant read Chef Remi Thermometer it works better than any deep fry thermometer I've ever used!  Quicker too! You can read about it here

Instructions

Peel and slice onion very very thin.  You will want to see the knife through the onion while cutting.  Separate onion rings and place in a 9 x 13 pan or dish.  Cover with the buttermilk.  Soak for at least 1 hour to overnight.  Place in fridge if soaking overnight.  **You must soak in the buttermilk or they won't be the same.

Mix all dry ingredients together in medium size bowl with whisk.

Preheat oil to 375 degrees in 3 or 4 qt. stainless steel pot .
*This is one of the most important things to reach and keep the temperature at 375.  Check frequently.

  • Remove onion rings from buttermilk with tongs, draining some.
  • Place in coating mixture, moving and separating so all are coated.
  • Fry in oil 2-3 minutes or until lightly browned, moving in oil easy after frying a touch to brown evenly.  Turn until browned to your liking.  ** Keep in mind this will go quickly so don't do anything else when frying these.
Drain on doubled paper towels on platter.  Tent with aluminum foil to keep warm.
Serve immediately for best taste.

I can tell you these are exactly like the Ruby Tuesday Onion Strings.
We really love them.
Enjoy!
