I have used a bag of this before many months ago. Sam's used to carry Dixie Crystals Sugar. I read somewhere that Crystal Sugar is made from beets.
I called the United Sugars to speak with a representative, who was extremely nice and helpful. This what she told me.
Look at the Lot Number. If your bag has a lot number that starts with a K then it is made from beets. If the lot number begins with an F it is made from sugar cane.
Crystal Sugar (R) is the pure and natural ingredient you have counted on for great taste since 1899.
If you have any questions for them you can call 1-800-782-9611
15 calories per tsp. There are two videos on the site one for processing beets and the other cane here
American Sugar Crystal Company here.
I'll let you know what I think about this beet sugar we have when I come to a conclusion.
- I don't like the fact that they use Roundup Ready Sugar Beet Seeds...here.
- This page tells of the GM Seeds here
- Located in Minnesota details of factory here
I expect sugar substitute advocates out there would argue me down about the use of sugar but..I like it, I use it and feel the substitutes are worse. The body is fooled into thinking they are sugars too so what can be gained? The cancer risks are enough to make me avoid those.
I hear Domino Sugar is GMO Free. I'll check that out next time Sam's carries this for now anyway.
I found this GMO COMPASS site here
Commercial utilization of GM sugar cane is possible in the near future in the USA and Brazil...
How many gallon bags can you get from a 50 Lb. Bag of Crystal Sugar?
I filled :
- 9 gallon bags with 10 cups each.
- 1 gallon bag with 9 cups.
That is the information I was going to put in this post so I and others who buy in bulk would know.
While doing that I saw the reviews and that this sugar wasn't like the Dixie Crystals that Sam's Clubs had carried in the past. So the research began...
Until next time..
